    Non-LTE Line-Formation and Abundances of Sulfur and Zinc in F, G, and K Stars

    Extensive statistical-equilibrium calculations on neutral sulfur and zinc were carried out, in order to investigate how the non-LTE effect plays a role in the determination of S and Zn abundances in F, G, and K stars. Having checked on the spectra of representative F-type stars (Polaris, Procyon, and alpha Per) and the Sun that our non-LTE corrections yield a reasonable consistency between the abundances derived from different lines, we tried an extensive non-LTE reanalysis of published equivalent-width data of S I and Zn I lines for metal-poor halo/disk stars. According to our calculations, S I 9212/9228/9237 lines suffer significant negative non-LTE corrections amounting to <~ 0.2--0.3 dex, while LTE is practically valid for S I 8683/8694 lines. Embarrassingly, as far as the very metal-poor regime is concerned, a marked discordance is observed between the [S/Fe] values from these two abundance indicators, in the sense that the former attains a nearly flat plateau (or even a slight downward bending) while the latter shows an ever-increasing trend with a further lowering of metallicity. The reason for this discrepancy is yet to be clarified. Regarding Zn, we almost confirmed the characteristic tendencies of [Zn/Fe] reported from recent LTE studies (i.e., an evident/slight increase of [Zn/Fe] with a decrease of [Fe/H] for very metal-poor/disk stars), since the non-LTE corrections for the Zn I 4722/4810 and 6362 lines (tending to be positive and gradually increasing towards lower [Fe/H]) are quantitatively of less significance (<~ 0.1 dex).Comment: 33 pages, 7 figures, PASJ, Vol. 57, No. 5 (2005) in pres

    Influence of Protamine and Gangliosides on the Binding of Rubidium by the Na,K-ATPase Solubilized Preparation from Cerebral Microsomes.

    1) A highly specific and active Na, K-ATPase preparation was obtained from cerebral microsomes by a slightly modified NaI-treatment. Using the ATPase preparations, the effects of protamine and gangliosides on the binding of rubidium and the activity of Na, K-activated ATPase were examined. 2) The results on the time course of the rubidium-binding by the ATPase preparation indicated that the binding pattern in the presence of ATP and Mg showed a fundamental difference from those in the absence of ATP and Mg. 3) The rubidium-binding by the ATPase preparation was dependent on ATP and Mg. The ATP dependent rubidium-binding was inhibited by ouabain, Ca and K. High concentrations of Na also decreased the binding. 4) The ATP dependent rubidium-binding was apparently inhibited by protamine. The inhibitory effect of protamine was removed by the addition of gangliosides and excess cations. 5) Low concentrations of protamine did not affect the release of bound rubidium from the ATPase preparation. Higher concentrations of protamine caused release of the bound rubidium. 6) The Na, K-activated ATPase activity of the ATPase preparation was selectively inhibited by protamine, though the activity of Mg-ATPase was not influenced. These effects of protamine on the Na, K-activated ATPase activity were antagonized by the addition of gangliosides and cations. 7) The actions of protamine and gangliosides on the binding of rubidium and the Na,K-activated ATPase were discussed on the basis of these results

    Observation of Microtremors in the Tsukuba Area, Japan, using a Portable Broadband Seismometer

    Studies of microtremors have been advanced by different approaches, that is, a variety of observational studies and analyses, for both the short-period and the long-period ranges since the microtremors for each range have their own source and site characteristics in time and space. We, therefore, conducted microtremor observation around Tsukuba City, Ibaraki, Japan, in July and August, 1991, in order to clarify site characteristics of six locations around the Tsukuba Mountain, deploying a portable broadband seismometer (Streckeisen STS-2) in the field of subsurface structure and studying ground motion in both frequency ranges, simultaneously. By a comparison with an STS-1 seismometer, the STS-2 gives reliable frequency ranges higher than 0.09 Hz and 0.05 Hz in horizontal and vertical components, respectively. The correlation of the reference site and the other sites implies that the source of microtremors shares common characteristics for the lower range ( 1 Hz), particularly 1.2 ~ 2.5 Hz, in this area. Three types of dominant peak frequencies for the range of 0.1 ~ 1 Hz are revealed: (1) the peak frequencies ranging from 0.2 to 0.3 Hz observed near Mt.Tsukuba can be explained by the topographic high model of Bard (1982). Two frequency peaks ranging (2) from 0.2 to 0.4 Hz and (3) from 0.5 to 0.8 Hz, observed at the stations on alluvials, are related to any vertical resonance in soft layers, consistent with other geological information. Amplitude ratios at sedimentary sites with respect to TSK (Mt.Tsukuba), a rock site, are greater than unity over 5 Hz where the ratios are reported to be smaller than unity in many areas, which implies relatively hard sedimentary layers in the Tsukuba area

    AbstractThe amino acid sequence of heat-stable enterotoxin, produced by Vibrio cholerae non-01 and isolated from its culture supernatant, was determined by both Edman degradation of native and reductively carboxy-methylated enterotoxin and also a combination of fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry and carboxy-peptidase Y digestion of native enterotoxin to be as follows: Ile-Asp-Cys-Cys-Glu-Ile-Cys-Cys-Asn-Pro-Ala-Cys-Phe-Gly-Cys-Leu-Asn. This sequence is very similar, but not identical, to those of heat-stable enterotoxins produced by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli and Yersinia enterocolitica

    Drastic Spectroscopic Variability of the Be/X-ray Binary A0535+262/V725 Tau during and after the 2009 Giant Outburst

    We report on high-dispersion optical spectroscopic observations of the Be/X-ray binary A0535+262/V725 Tau during the giant outburst in November/December 2009 and after it. The observed emission line profiles, reflecting the structure of the geometrically thin circumstellar envelope of the Be star (Be disk), show drastic variabilities and indicate the existence of a warped component. The enhanced blue shoulder seen after periastron passage implies the gas stream from a dense part of the Be disk to the neutron star.Comment: accepted to PAS

    Single-cell transcriptome atlas of Drosophila gastrula 2.0

However, the mechanisms underlying these processes in a genome-wide view remain ambiguous, partly because the single-cell transcriptomic data of early developing embryos containing accurate spatial and lineage information are still lacking. Here, we report a single-cell transcriptome atlas of Drosophila gastrulae, divided into 77 transcriptomically distinct clusters. We find that the expression profiles of plasma-membrane-related genes, but not those of transcription-factor genes, represent each germ layer, supporting the nonequivalent contribution of each transcription-factor mRNA level to effector gene expression profiles at the transcriptome level. We also reconstruct the spatial expression patterns of all genes at the single-cell stripe level as the smallest unit. This atlas is an important resource for the genome-wide understanding of the mechanisms by which genes cooperatively orchestrate Drosophila gastrulation

    CENP-A Phosphorylation by Aurora-A in Prophase Is Required for Enrichment of Aurora-B at Inner Centromeres and for Kinetochore Function

    AbstractThe Aurora (Ipl1)-related kinases are universal regulators of mitosis. We now show that Aurora-A, in addition to Aurora-B, regulates kinetochore function in human cells. A two-hybrid screen identified the kinetochore component CENP-A as a protein that interacts with Aurora-A. Aurora-A phosphorylated CENP-A in vitro on Ser-7, a residue also known to be targeted by Aurora-B. Depletion of Aurora-A or Aurora-B by RNA interference revealed that CENP-A is initially phosphorylated in prophase in a manner dependent on Aurora-A, and that this reaction appears to be required for the subsequent Aurora-B-dependent phosphorylation of CENP-A as well as for the restriction of Aurora-B to the inner centromere in prometaphase. Prevention of CENP-A phosphorylation also led to chromosome misalignment during mitosis as a result of a defect in kinetochore attachment to microtubules. Our observations suggest that phosphorylation of CENP-A on Ser-7 by Aurora-A in prophase is essential for kinetochore function
